corporate social responsibility
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an important part of Aqua Fun Academy’s history – and an equally important part of its future. In its efforts to drive stronger growth and enhance long-term value, the company remains firmly committed to making a positive difference in AFA’s communities. As Toronto’s up and coming swim school, Aqua Fun Academy has a unique opportunity to make a positive economic, social and environmental impact in the communities in which it operates.
Aqua Fun Academy’s CSR strategy includes three priority areas: Employees, Environment and Community Investment. The work that we do in each of these categories is based on the company’s business strategy as well as the expectations from our key stakeholders.
Aqua Fun Academy integrates CSR into all its business activities with the belief that success is measured by more than financial results: it is also measured by customer satisfaction and employee engagement, strong governance practices and support for communities the company serves.
Canadian Tire Jumpstart
No kid should be left on the sidelines but in Canada 1 in 3 families cannot afford to enroll their kids in organized sports. That’s almost 750,000 kids every year who want to play, but just can’t. That is the core of Canadian Tire Jumpstart’s mission and a cornerstone of Aqua Fun Academy’s Corporate Social Responsibility approach towards our community. Since 2005, more than 1 million kids between the ages of 4 and 18 have been helped by Jumpstart and that number grows every day. How can Jumpstart help those kids dreaming on the sidelines? Sign them up. Suit them up. And get them in the game. Aqua Fun Academy is proud to be a partner in this noble tradition.
Aqua Fun Academy is committed to ensuring that swimming, due to its priority (over other sports) as water safety training is accessible to all families wishing to participate, regardless of income. Parents who are registering for Aqua Fun Academy programs using Jumpstart funding should call us directly at 416-904-6284 to register over the phone as the enrolment procedure differs slightly from the electronic registration system.
Toner Recycling Program
Printer cartridges are made up of a complex combination of plastics, metals, foam, ink and toner. Throwing them into landfill represents a waste of resources and contributes to the growing problem of electronic waste. By recycling our cartridges we are helping to reduce this waste.
Our toner cartridges are recycled in conjunction with the HP Planet Partners Return and Recycling Program, which operates in 45 countries. Products are sorted and shredded, then separated into plastics and metals. Residual ink, foam or toner are also separated and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. Recovered plastic and metal materials are further processed into their raw forms so they can be used in new HP computers, printers and print cartridges; automotive parts, clothes hangers, microchip processing trays, serving trays, shoe soles, spools and other everyday products.
The world is in our hands. Every bit counts.
School Fundraiser Contributor
AFA is proud to a part of the backbone of our education system. We do our best to step up when asked, and this year we have contributed complimentary swim lessons to several schools in the Toronto area. We do this mostly through silent auction contribution of swim classes, however we are always working with school groups to provide a donation package that works best for them.
All schools are welcome to approach us to participate in their fundraising events by contacting Omid at [email protected]
Breast Cancer Awareness
Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.
AFA does its part through the annual breast cancer awareness drive every October. Defeating cancer is something we can only do together, as a society.
Sunny View Holiday Drive
We’re aware that those around us might not be as fortunate as we are. Which is why contributing to events like Sunny View’s annual holiday drive is our way of giving back. While December might be our break from swimming classes, we certainly did not break from helping our community. AFA’s committed staff used their down time to help with putting together holiday care packages for several families in need at Sunny View Public School. Thank you to all staff and friends who helped us raise the the goods we needed. Corporate Social Responsibility isn’t just a fancy term for us, it’s our way of life.
Commitment to Hiring Students
AFA loves hiring students! Students are up to date on the latest technologies being taught in school, and eager to put what they’ve learned into practice in the business world. Young people in their first jobs are often keen to learn and have new, creative ideas that can inspire others.
Hiring students also allows us to contribute to the shaping of future minds. Students are tight on budget and hiring them is a good way to pay today’s high tuition fees.
After all, we’re all just a kid from somewhere trying to make our way in this world.
Employee Carpool Program
Carpooling allows us to do our part for both the environment and for our employees. According to Environment Canada, overall transportation represents the largest single source of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 27% of the total. Using fewer cars means less pollution, conservation of habitat, and less demand for new roads and parking lots. Using fewer cars also means less production of greenhouse gases, a major contributor to climate change. Carpool regularly and you can feel proud that you’re helping the environment.
Carpooling also makes commuting simpler for our pool employees, most of whom are students arriving from university centres. Students also have tight budgets, and using complimentary company vehicles reduces their cost burden. In 2015, carpooling shed approximately 60% off our employees’ commute times through the use of HOV lanes and avoiding public transportation, which does not directly service most of our locations. Time saved that can be used more effectively at the pool.
Sunny View PS Improvements
At Aqua Fun Academy, we are committed to building a company of which we can all be proud – not only of the innovative services we provide and the financial results we achieve, but the manner in which we achieve them. Whether it’s responsible sourcing, giving back to our communities, or reducing our environmental impact, we believe corporate responsibility is a companywide effort.
Our latest effort is the new $800.00 lane ropes all Sunny View swimmers can enjoy. This is the start of our contribution to Sunny View’s larger long term revitalization plan.
